Their colouring makes them easy to mix, and as they look so spectacular in the vase, the stems are often sought after by florists. Each collection contains 20 gladioli – 10 of each of the following: ‘Lennon’: Gently ruffled violet flowers, which have a paler throat, form on strong, upright spikes, which rise from amongst pointed, sword-like leaves. Each stem can contain up to ten buds that will open in succession over a period of two weeks. Grows to 90cm. ‘Thalia’: Producing tall spikes of rich purple blooms, each with a deeper blotch in the throat, this gladiolus makes an excellent choice for cutting and exhibiting – or for adding vertical interest to the mixed border. Grows to 90cm. Garden care: Plant corms 10-15cm (4-6in) deep and 25cm apart on a bed of sharp sand to aid drainage. In frost-prone areas, lift them when the leaves turn yellow-brown, and store the corms in a dry, frost-free place over winter.
