Appearing later in the season and usually at the same time as the foliage, they look very striking in mid- to late spring – particularly when viewed from underneath. Throughout the summer the rich green leaves provide lightly dappled shade before taking on autumnal tones, while the tree’s gracefully spreading branches, which become more defined as the plant gets older, create an elegant effect that will offer interest through the winter. Garden care: Plant ‘Shogetsu’ as soon as conditions allow (avoiding frozen and waterlogged soil). Choose a sheltered spot to protect emerging blossom. Incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Lightly prune in summer to retain the shape and cut back any dead, diseased or crossing branches.
