The single white flowers appear early so, to ensure a good crop, they should be protected from spring frosts. The smooth reddish purple-skinned, medium-sized fruits are ready to pick in August. This tree will produce a better crop with a pollination partner, such as other plums, gages or pluots. St Julien A is a semi-vigorous rootstock for plum trees and will produce a mature tree up to about 4 metres tall. They are suitable for growing half-standard, bush, and fan-trained trees. Garden care: Plant as soon as conditions allow in soil that is not waterlogged or frozen. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake and support firmly. Summer prune stone fruits to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease, which enters through cuts. Late summer pruning is ideal – the tree is still in active growth but has slowed down and is able to repair itself. Check and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
