The versatile fruit can either be eaten fresh or used for cooking, and is fairly juicy with yellow flesh. It is a self-fertile tree that is a wonderful plum for a small garden. VVA-1 produces a semi-dwarf tree. Garden care: Plant as soon as conditions allow in soil that is not waterlogged or frozen. When planting, incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Summer prune stone fruits to reduce the risk of silver leaf disease, which enters through cuts. Late summer pruning is ideal – the tree is still in active growth but has slowed down and is able to repair itself. Check and remove any damaged, diseased, or broken branches.
