The snapdragon-like flowers are loved by butterflies. Position: full sun Soil: moderately, light, well-drained, preferably sandy soil Rate of growth: average Flowering period: June to September Hardiness: fully hardy Often producing its snapdragon-like flowers over a prolonged period from late spring to early autumn, this upright perennial adds a bright shot of sunshine yellow to wildflower meadows or prairie-style schemes. The flowers are sought after by pollinating insects and the plant is often used to create a yellow dye. Garden care: Sow seeds shallowly in trays filled with a good seed compost and pot on when they are large enough to handle. Gradually harden them off before planting out at 30cm intervals, taking care not to damage their roots. After the flowers have started to die back, leave a few of the faded flower spikes on the plants as this will encourage them to self-seed.
