Position: full sun Soil: deep, moist but well-drained Rate of growth: fast Ultimate size on Gisela 5 rootstock: 4 x 4m (13 x 13ft) Flowering period: April to May Hardiness: fully hardy ‘Penny’ is a compact, recently introduced, late-cropping cherry, with large, heart-shaped, firm, dark red fruit which are described as being sweet, juicy and mild. Bred for British conditions, it is not self-fertile, and requires a pollinating partner from groups 3 and 4 such as ‘Summer Sun’ or ‘Stella’. Garden care: When planting incorporate lots of well-rotted garden compost in the planting hole and stake firmly. Stone fruits like the cherry should be lightly pruned in the summer because they are prone to a disease called silver leaf which enters through cuts. If you prune in late summer, the sap is slowing but is still running fast enough to seal up any wounds. Lightly prune to retain shape and remove any damaged, diseased or broken branches.
