A heritage broadbean variety dating back to the 1800’s. Position: full sun Soil: humus-rich, moisture retentive soil This lovely heritage variety, dating back to the 1800s, has recently been rediscovered and is now popular once again for its sumptuous deep crimson flowers, making it a pretty addition to an ornamental potager or even popped in among the flower borders. The blooms are followed by upright pods of sturdy beans with an excellent flavour. If picked very young, broad beans have the most delicate flavour and can be eaten pod and all: just top and tail and steam whole. Growing Instructions: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil and sow seeds individually in early spring direct where they are to grow, 5cm deep and 10cm apart. Protect from mice and slugs. Support loosely with canes and string once they reach 15cm tall and pinch out the tops once pods have set to prevent blackfly. Sow: February-April Harvest: June-August
