A classic hedging plant loved for its nuts and abundant flowers
A hardy and easy to grow hedging plant, Corylus avellana (but most commonly known as Hazel) is one of the most classic UK species around. Between late winter and early spring, it produces edible nuts which are relished by birds and squirrels. Interestingly, Hazel plants have both male and female flowers – the male flowers comprise of yellow catkins, while the female flowers are very inconspicuous, but can be identified by the tiny red stamen-like structures that appear on green buds.
