Persimmon trees are among the oldest cultivated plants, going back 2000 years, but was only introduced to Europe in the 1780s. Originating from temperate regions in China and Japan, the tree is well suited to the British climate. Will produce countless apple-sized fruits when mature and will be a haven for birds. The fruit needs to be be left to ripen or otherwise will be very astringent. Flowers are unremarkable, but autumn colour is very good indeed, as good as many maples.
